Michael Petering Regional Manager & Craig Thomas Senior Community Enterprise Manager from the Bendigo Bank addressed the meeting re the possibility of a branch in Beaconsfield. There was much discussion and lots of questions and answers. The main benefit of a Community Bank would be in keeping local capital local. At present Beaconsfield people spend their money elsewhere because they do their banking elsewhere. Community banking will produce an income stream for the local community. Bendigo Bank can also pump money back into the community by way of grants. Profits from community banks are spent by the local community. Each bank has its own board and manages its own profit. A Bendigo Community Bank is basically a franchise. Three hundred shareholders needed to get up and running. $600,000 is needed for start up. It will take about 3 years to turn a profit. It takes about 12 to 18 months to get a Community Bank up and running. It may be possible for a community like ours to join with a Community Bank like the one in Lang Lang. The matter to have further discussion at our next meeting. |
